Young Student’s River Cleanup Sparks Questions About Indian Government's Responsibility A young student’s campaign to clean the polluted Ajnar River in Madhya Pradesh has gone viral, earning praise while prompting criticism of local authorities. Surendra Singh Choudhary, popularly known online as Bittu Tabahi, began removing plastic, rubbish and other waste from the river in Biaora, Rajgarh district, on January 26, 2026. The BSc student, reported to be about 20 or 21, initially worked largely alone and spent his own money on equipment. Videos showed Choudhary entering heavily polluted sections of the river and manually pulling out accumulated waste. He said people initially laughed at him, while the work exposed him to contaminated water, sharp objects and snakes. His persistence attracted national attention after videos documenting the cleanup spread online. Industrialist Anand Mahindra praised the initiative, while Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav later met Choudhary and recognised his work. Many social-media users contrasted the student’s actions with what they described as official inaction. They questioned why one young man had to begin cleaning a public river before government agencies responded. Removing surface rubbish is only one part of restoration.
