India’s ATM Network Shrinks as UPI Payments Surge India’s ATM network has contracted as consumers increasingly use the Unified Payments Interface for everyday transactions. RBI data shows that the number of bank-owned ATMs declined from 218,815 in March 2024 to 209,331 in March 2026. The total recovered slightly to 209,812 by July, but remained 9,000 machines below its March 2024 level. ATM and cash-recycler transaction value also fell from around ₹2.77 lakh crore in March 2024 to ₹2.20 lakh crore in July 2026, a decline of more than 20%. Banks are reassessing machines with low usage because ATMs require expenditure on rent, security, electricity, maintenance and cash replenishment. UPI’s expansion is a major part of this shift. NPCI recorded 23.66 billion UPI transactions worth nearly ₹29.88 lakh crore in July 2026. QR-based payments now allow consumers to pay shops, street vendors and utility companies without first withdrawing cash. However, the decline in ATMs does not mean India has become cashless. Currency in circulation continued to grow and reportedly reached ₹42.54 lakh crore in July. Cash remains important in rural areas, during network failures and for people with limited access to smartphones or digital banking. The overall trend therefore reflects changing cash usage rather than cash disappearing. Indians may hold and use physical currency while visiting ATMs less frequently because many small payments have moved to UPI. Banks are also replacing some traditional cash-dispensing machines with cash recyclers and expanding business-correspondent and micro-ATM services. The challenge will be ensuring that cost-cutting does not reduce cash access in underserved locations.
