In 2024, cybercriminals caused financial losses of over ₹22,800 crore to Indian citizens, according to data shared by the government. This marks a massive 206% increase compared to 2023, when the losses were around ₹7,400 crore. The number of reported cyber fraud cases also surged, reaching over 36 lakh incidents in a single year. These scams took various forms, including impersonation, fake apps, fraudulent messages, and social engineering tricks. Many victims were lured through what appeared to be legitimate online banking or trading platforms. In some cases, cybercriminals even used artificial intelligence tools to manipulate and deceive people more effectively. To combat the growing threat, the government has emphasized the use of tools like the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and a centralized platform for managing online fraud complaints. Authorities were able to freeze or recover nearly ₹5,500 crore through timely interventions on complaints. Law enforcement made over 10,000 arrests in connection with these crimes. Additionally, more than 9 lakh mobile SIM cards were blocked, and over 2.6 lakh mobile devices were deactivated. Systems like the Suspect Registry and a digital tracking tool helped identify around 11 lakh suspect IDs and 24 lakh mule accounts, preventing potential losses of thousands of crores more.
