Assam Destroys Seized Drugs Worth ₹472 Crore in Massive Anti-Narcotics Drive Assam intensified its campaign against drug trafficking with the destruction of seized narcotics worth more than ₹472 crore during a state-level disposal programme in Nalbari district. The event drew widespread attention after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma personally drove a road roller over packets of confiscated drugs, symbolically reinforcing the government's message of zero tolerance towards the narcotics trade. The disposal drive was organised at the 14th Assam Police Battalion headquarters and formed part of the state's ongoing crackdown on illegal drugs. According to the state government, the destroyed stock included heroin, morphine, ganja, opium, methamphetamine-based Yaba tablets, cough syrup and other psychotropic substances seized during anti-drug operations across Assam. Officials estimated the total value of the narcotics at ₹472.51 crore, making it one of the state's largest drug disposal exercises in recent years. The destruction process is expected to continue for several days using a specialised drug disposal machine provided by the Union government. Addressing the programme, Chief Minister Sarma said Assam has registered around 3,300 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act over the past five years and seized drugs valued at more than ₹3,227 crore. He said the government plans to further strengthen intelligence gathering, improve coordination with neighbouring states and target both suppliers and trafficking networks to curb the illegal drug trade.
