China builds world’s largest hydropower project on Brahmaputra China is constructing what is expected to become the world’s largest hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet. The river later enters India as the Siang and Brahmaputra before flowing into Bangladesh. The project will consist of five cascading hydropower stations near the river’s “Great Bend,” where the water descends approximately 2,000 metres over a distance of about 50 kilometres. Estimated to cost up to $170 billion, it could generate nearly 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually when completed in the 2030s. Reports frequently describe it as three times larger than China’s Three Gorges Dam. However, this comparison concerns expected annual electricity generation—not necessarily the dam’s physical dimensions or the quantity of water stored. Viral claims also suggest that the project could slow Earth’s rotation. Redistributing a large quantity of water can technically alter the planet’s moment of inertia. A scientific calculation estimated that filling the Three Gorges reservoir could lengthen a day by approximately 0.06 microseconds—an effect far too small for humans to notice. No reliable calculation currently shows how the Yarlung Tsangpo project will affect Earth’s rotation. Because it comprises multiple stations and may operate differently from a giant storage reservoir, tripling its electricity output does not mean it will produce three times the rotational effect. India and Bangladesh have raised concerns about downstream water flows, ecological damage and emergency water releases. China maintains that the project will not seriously harm downstream countries and says environmental protection will be prioritised.
